J/22

The J/22, a 22-foot keel boat typically sailed by 3-4 people but also suitable for double-handed sailing, was first built in 1983 and utilizes a symmetrical spinnaker.

At the West Vancouver Yacht Club, sailors of all ages, including Juniors, Intermediates, and Adults, enjoy racing and sailing these versatile boats. They provide an excellent platform for learning and honing racing skills and are widely used in match and team racing worldwide.

In 2023, WVYC hosted The CICSA (Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association) Match Racing Nationals featuring the J/22s.
The J/22s at WVYC are a Club-owned fleet, available for private lessons through Learn to Sail programs and for charter via the Boat2Go program.

For further details, visit the J/22 webpage under On the Water – Boat Sharing  –  J22s. With over 1,650 J/22s currently sailing in 65 active fleets across eighteen countries on three continents, these boats continue to be a popular choice among sailors globally.

VX One

The VX One is a dynamic 19-foot sport boat renowned for its high performance. With a fitted weight of 224kg and a skiff hull form, it effortlessly planes in local conditions. Accommodating teams of two larger or three smaller sailors, it fosters a diverse and inclusive sailing environment, with a notable representation of female sailors.

This versatile boat demands a moderate level of athleticism, making it ideal for young sailors transitioning from high-performance dinghies and adults keen on staying fit. From teenagers to grandparents, the VX One attracts sailors of all ages.
In the VX One class, competition is centered on team skill rather than financial resources, embodying a true Corinthian spirit. Despite this, the racing remains fiercely competitive, boasting numerous world champions among its ranks.

Recognized with Sailing World’s prestigious Boat of the Year award in 2012, the VX One is one of the fastest-growing keelboat classes. The 2023 North American championship saw a significant increase in participation, with 46 boats competing, up from 36 the previous year.

While the US and Australia boast the largest national fleets, Canada has a strong presence, with notable victories by sailors from Royal Canadian YC and Royal St Lawrence YC.

Easily trailerable, the VX One facilitates exploration of different sailing venues. The west coast fleet is experiencing growth, thanks in part to the active participation of WVYC sailors in events stretching from local waters to California.
