CANSail Sailing Program

The West Vancouver Yacht Club offers the entire spectrum of Sail Canada-accredited curriculum, including all 6 CANSail progressions. Beginning with introductory sailing skills, like tiller steering and proper body positioning in CANSail 1, sailors progress through to racing development programs in CANSail 5 and 6.

CANSail 1 and 2 typically require at least two weeks of sailing to allow sailors time to learn and perform the skills required. We know that sailors and families have busy lives, so we have scheduled these courses in one-week intervals to allow flexibility with your schedule. We encourage sailors to register for two weeks of sailing throughout the summer, however they do not have to be consecutive weeks.  For CANSail 3 and up we run our courses in 2 week blocks to allow for all the material to be covered.

The CANSail classes are geared toward sailors ages 12 and up. Younger sailors are encouraged to try our Optimist CANSail program, covering the same skills but designed for younger sailors and taught in an age and size-appropriate Optimist dinghy.

Special Offer: Bring a Friend Sailing & Save. Register in any one of our CANSail programs, bring a friend, and both you and your friend will receive a 10% discount. Offer only available on CANSail 1 - 6 programs, and cannot be combined with other offers or discounts. Click here for full terms and conditions.

  • Commodores' Cup
    • At the end of each summer, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club hosts a regatta for junior sailors from around Greater Vancouver. Competitors must have taken part in a Learn-to-Sail program over the summer. For many, this event was their very first regatta. For all, it is a great learning experience and often a stepping stone onto joining race teams.

West Vancouver Yacht Club’s Junior Program has been attending for many years and fielded a team of keen and enthusiastic sailors: In addition to WVYC, clubs participating included Sea Cadets, Mac Sailing, Hollyburn Sailing Club, Eagle Harbour Yacht Club, Bowen Island Yacht Club, Squamish Yacht Club, and of course, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club to name a few.

The Regatta concluded with a fabulous buffet banquet where Commodores of the various participating clubs are invited to be part of the prize giving dinner.
