On August 1st at 7pm, the Club is very excited to be hosting a presentation by the premier off-shore racer Wendy Tuck. She is the first Australian female skipper ever appointed to lead a team of amateurs on the epic Clipper race, 40,000 nautical miles across the world’s oceans in 2015/16. She then went onto win the 2018 Clipper race as the first woman skipper ever to win since Tracy Edward came second in 1989/90. Before setting off on a second Clipper Race, Wendy rang in 2017 by achieving her life-long goal of making the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s honours list, after competing in a tenth Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. This race is close to Wendy’s heart. The 52-year-old was awarded the Jane Tate Memorial Trophy after being the first female Skipper across the Finish Line, plus she led her team to win the Clipper Race class of the 2015 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which doubled as Race 5 of the All-Australian Leg.

Wendy is currently skippering the Maiden, the original boat raced by an all women crew in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World race. The Maiden is on a two year world tour to raise awareness of and funds for the rights of women and the education of girls everywhere. The boat is part of the Maiden Factor, a Social Enterprise dedicated to the empowerment of women through equality. The Maiden is sailing from Honolulu to Vancouver to arrive in late July and will be moored in Coal Harbour, and then down the west coast of the United States on its tour of the world.
