Opti Nationals 2023

August 21st to 26th 2023

The West Vancouver Yacht Club is pleased to be hosting the 2023 annual Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association’s National Regatta. With competitors coming from across Canada and from abroad, WVYC is looking forward to bringing together these sailors for some great summer racing. This regatta will feature both Championship fleet racing as well as a Green fleet for new Optimist sailors.

      5-5.15pm Opening ceremony- competitors to meet at 5pm for a 5.15pm procession start, 24th Street and the Seawalk in Dundarave, click here for map to view the meeting point. It is a 15 minute drive from the yacht club. Allow plenty of time for on street parking or get the 250 bus from the yacht club and get off at 24th Street.   • FAQs
    • Arriving at West Vancouver Yacht Club
      When can I arrive? - You can arrive as of 4 pm on Friday, August 18th. Registration starts at 5pm on Sunday August 20th.
      Where do I put my boat? - Please find your assigned province area in the parking lot and put only your boat there.
      I have chartered a boat where do I collect it from? - Boats will be in our parking lot, located by province. They can be “collected” as of Friday at 4 pm, Saturday, Sunday or Monday from 9 am to noon.
      When is registration and equipment check? - Sunday August 20th, 5-8pm or Monday August 21st, 9am-4pm.

      Regatta
      Where do I find the sailing instructions? - They can be found on Clubspot under Notice Board. 
      Do the sailors get a lunch provided? - No, we do not provide a lunch.
      Where is the opening ceremony? - It will be held in Dundarave, click here for a map of the location.
      Where are the awards/closing ceremony? - They will be held at West Vancouver Yacht Club after the last races are completed and any relevant protests are revolved on August 26th.
      When are the event dinners? - August 21st at the opening ceremony at 6.15pm and the regatta dinner on Wednesday August 23rd estimated at 5 pm at West Vancouver Yacht Club.
      How do I buy a dinner ticket? - You may have purchased them during registration but can buy additional ones via Clubspot. The link to Clubspot was sent in an email to all competitors and coaches on August 13th. You can also buy any very last minute tickets at our information desk at the yachting centre. Note we are catering for exact numbers so there will be very few “spares” at the events. 
      Is there a chandlery onsite or nearby? - Yes, Rekord Marine will be on site.
      How do I view the races? - You can sign-up each morning for a limited number of spaces on our Spectator Boats at the Regatta Info Desk, or rent a 17’ Hourston Equipped with a 90HP engine boat for 5 people from Sewells Marina with a 30% discount. The code is optinationals2023. If you’re renting a boat, you must remain out of the regatta area unless officially registered as a Support Boat.

      Transportation
      Is there a bus to the yacht club? - Yes, public transport runs right outside the club. It is the #250 bus. Click here for the schedule. (Don’t take the 250A!!)
      Where can I rent a car? - Enterprise is our gold sponsor, click here for their website.
      Can I rent a boat? - You can rent a boat from Sewell's Marina, details listed above.

      I am coming by car, where do I park? - Please park at Thunderbird Marina next door to the yacht club (not the Yacht club) and we have a shuttle that can run you to the yacht club. Click here for where to park at Thunderbird

      Things to do
      Is there a beach nearby? - Yes, there are many. Eagle Harbour Beach is within 10-15 minutes walking distance of the yacht club Bachelor Bay is also nearby along with Whytecliff Park, where you may be able to view the racing depending on the course layout.
      How far is downtown Vancouver from the Yacht Club? - 24km. The #250 Bus runs to and from Vancouver.
      What are the top things to do? - Click here for details of some local attractions and things to do.

      How close is Whistler? - 104km approximately one hour and 15 minutes drive
      Is there a golf course nearby? - Yes Gleneagles 9-hole public course is just up the road. Click here for information and to book a tee time

      West Vancouver Yacht Club
      Is there WIFI at the club? - Yes the code is C0nnectWVYC. During the lunchtime, if you’re not having lunch, please grab a chair in a bar area should we need the tables.
      I like my coffee in the morning, will there be coffee and food on site to purchase each day? - Yes we will be serving coffee and muffins from Tuesday morning onwards.
      Is there food service at the yacht club each day? - The club will be open from Wednesday August 23rd for lunch and dinner every night but Friday (two lucky folks are tying the knot!).
      How close is the nearest coffee shop? - 3.1km in Horseshoe Bay or Isetta coffee shop, 5.2km along Marine Drive both on bus route #250 from the yacht club.
      How close is the nearest grocery store? - Safeway is 4.6km away in Caulfeild Village.
      Are there any strange protocols in the Clubhouse? - We’re a super friendly club, so really easy going including how you dress. A couple of minor things… no cell phone calls inside, no hats for the gents, and don’t ring the bell, or you’re buying everyone a round!
